American Woodcock Chick

While participating in the May 2021 Audubon Spring Bird Count, we flushed a woodcock while we were walking in a cedar swamp. Scattered about were tiny woodcock chicks, some attempting to get away while others were motionless. The mother was fluttering about like she was injured.

We froze to prevent stepping on the chicks but before carefully walking out, I snapped the photo with my smartphone that this opaque watercolor painting is based on.
