13X13 mixed media drawing of a killdeer chick in hand done with archival materials including tinted stonehenge paper
While walking by the deserted Soaring Eagle Casino, I was alerted to the alarm call of a killdeer near the highway-somewhat busy with noon hour traffic. Scattering in all directions were tiny Killdeer chicks looking like cotton balls running on toothpicks. Had the casino been open I doubt this nest could have even started in this location. One of the chicks was running towards the road so I captured him and took a quick photo before releasing in a safe spot.
Years ago I caught a Killdeer chick and drew it from life. That was uncomfortable for me because the parents were right besides me hollering all the time-awful for them! Thank goodness for smartphones which allowed a good photo with minimal disturbance.
