Spirit House

11.25 X 7.25 inch transparent watercolor created with light-fast, archival materials. Painted on location (plein air).

This is a spirit house I painted at the Pinery Cemetery located on the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Spirit Houses were erected over the graves of Ojibwe people in the great lakes region of North America. They took the place of traditional burials and have now become a tradition that is being practiced again. Many of the spirit houses are very old and have been replaced. Others like this one are disintegrating or were destroyed during a wildfire a few years back. The larger spirit houses in the middle of the cemetery belonged to the chiefs of the 19th century.

Materials used:

-Strathmore 300 pound rough watercolor paper 12X16 inches and Daniel Smith Transparent Watercolors
